Curriculum intent statement

Our aim is to provide a creative, exciting and engaging curriculum which will enable our children to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to develop as educated, well-balanced citizens in our ever-changing world. There is a high focus on developing children’s moral, spiritual, social and cultural understanding and it is our responsibility to teach our children to become independent thinkers and problem solvers who persevere, embrace challenges and are resilient. Our curriculum drivers embody our school ethos and we are proud as staff and children to use these every day to drive our learning forward. We strongly value team work and creatively design opportunities for children to work together and develop their social skills. The Brunton curriculum is designed to build confident, enthusiastic learners who enjoy learning and take pride in their work.

We have developed our curriculum carefully so that it ensures coverage and progression, whilst also providing engaging and purposeful learning opportunities. Subject leaders play an important part in the success of our curriculum by leading a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review. Our curriculum provides children with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which they can learn and develop a range of transferable skills.  The children lead their own learning at Brunton - their own experiences, their interests and the locality are frequently used as a starting point for engaging interest.

Our termly curriculum enrichment weeks provide a breadth of experience within a subject area whilst developing the children’s curiosity. We draw on outside speakers and involve parents where possible to help captivate the children’s interest. A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations and during our curriculum enrichment weeks visitors expose the children to life outside of school, providing them with ideas for their future. We are passionate that all children realise that it is a big and wonderful world out there and that they can play an active and positive part in it.

We plan opportunities for the children to know about keeping safe, linked to the KCSiE document. We also plan for and promote British Values, (Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs) and the Equality Act (No Outsiders) ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as a UK citizen. We promote and encourage physical health and well-being by offering a range of clubs to give children an opportunity to access a wide variety of sports clubs before and after school. Our PE curriculum is enriched with opportunities for children to engage in competitions, learning about team spirit, and we fully embed the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle.
